HP-UX Backup Utilities BACKUP/RESTORE Overview -------- Information is one of the most important assets of a company. Therefore, availability of data and protection against data loss is one of the most critical issues for system managers to address. These features are more and more important as data is spread out across a heterogeneous network. Backup/Restore utilities are required to reduce the system manager's task of archiving while providing users with more control over access of their files. A new generation of backup and recovery utilities is required to provide protection against data loss and minimize the time data is not accessible due to backup and recovery processes. The UNIX operating system provides commands which allow users to backup and restore their systems. To accommodate HP-UX customer's needs for enhanced backup solutions, HP provides additionally fbackup, HP Omniback and HP Omniback/Turbo. ******** slide1.GAL *************** fbackup ------- Fbackup is a backup tool, supplied with HP-UX, that is targeted for small and midrange systems. It provides a cost-effective solution that is easy to use. With HP-UX Release 8.0, fbackup will be integrated into the System Administration Manager (SAM). Fbackup will also support HP DAT/DDS tapes, which allow unattended backup of up to 1.3 Gbytes of data. HP OmniBack ----------- HP OmniBack is a network-oriented backup management system. By taking a network-wide perspective, it automates all backup operations for any set of machines across a distributed network. System operators can sit at any machine on the network and utilize storage devices across the network. HP OmniBack provides the traditional backup and restore function and enhances them with sophisticated scheduling and journaling facilities. HP OmniBack is based on Apollo's Network Computing Services (NCS) and is already available on all HP/Apollo Domain systems and will be available on the HP 9000 Series 300/400/600/800 in the 2Q91. HP OmniBack/Turbo ----------------- HP OmniBack/Turbo provides additional major enhancements to HP Omniback for high-end HP-UX systems and servers. It is designed for networked system environments and for systems with a large amount of online data, especially large databases. HP OmniBack/Turbo is a truly innovative product, combining network backup capabilities with high-performance local back- up (more than 5Gbytes per hour for certain configurations). Through the support of rewritable optical library systems, this product will allow unattended backup/recovery of more than 40 Gbytes of data. It will be perfectly suited for large distributed computing environments with the need for central backup. HP Omniback/Turbo will be available in the 2Q91 for the HP 9000 Series 600/800. If you would like additional information on HP-UX backup/restore commands and products, consult the Backup White Paper, available from the Literature Distribution Center (P/N 5952-2178). This White Paper explains HP's backup strategy for different user environments. ********* slide2.GAL ************** ********* slide3.GAL ************** Positioning Versus Competition ------------------------------ HP OmniBack/Turbo will be the first backup/recovery product in the UNIX world that provides real High-Speed and Unattended Backup. Furthermore, HP OmniBack and HP OmniBack/Turbo will be the first network backup/recovery solutions in the UNIX world provided by a system vendor.
